Family Fitness Essentials
by Arnold Geignert

These days it is difficult enough to find time for personal
fitness so the thought of exercising as a family seems
impossible. Everybody follows such tight schedules that it
becomes extremely difficult to find a time for the entire
family to meet together. . .let alone exercise together.
But it is not impossible and here is how you can make it
work.

1. Identify the time required for other essential
activities. Use a calendar to keep track of all
priorities like school, office, and other fixed and firm
activities. These cannot be changed except for holidays
or if something unexpected comes up. Check out the times
left--like a free evening during the week or a
morning. Ask each family member if any of those times suit
them.

2. Find an activity that everyone enjoys. Hiking, jogging,
swimming, or volleyball are great ways of sharing family
time while keeping active and staying fit. Make a list of
family fitness options and ask everyone to vote for
their favorites. Alternate the time spent on each fitness
activity so everyone gets to do something they enjoy.

3. Accommodate the pace of activity to include everyone~s
needs or limitations. This may mean that the some will
have to keep a slower pace than they otherwise would to
allow the very young and the elderly keep up. You may have
to complete an activity in phases, swimming for example,
by having young children rest at prescribed intervals
while older children and adults have swim time more in
line with their abilities. Make each fitness session fun
and challenging, but not overwhelming, for each member of
the family.

4. Do not obsess about the family fitness schedule. If
someone in the family cannot make it for a particular
session, let the others can continue with the activity
anyway. Don't emphasize competition because those who
don't win may not like it. Fitness activities should be
fun for the whole family and not a burden for anyone.
Keep a flexible schedule for family fitness time.

Family fitness time provides great opportunities for
getting fit or maintaining fitness, spending time
together, and having fun. If you don~t already enjoy
fitness activities as a family, this may be the time to
start a tradition. Not only will everyone get fitter, the
kids maydevelop life-long fitness routines that they will
pass down to their children and grandchildren. Parents
can likewise enjoy good fitness into the golden years of
their lives.
