How to be a winner at Basketball
by Gillian Makin

If you want to be part of the winning team on a permanent
basis you need to be able to win both at home and away. A
home side doesn't need to play more than an average game
because the chances are that the away team will play an
inferior game. Why would this be? Research proves that
although the away team may be tired from a long journey,
the reason they lose is because they have a negative
attitude. They go into a game hoping that they might win,
rather than believing it. This is such a defeatist attitude
that they have little fire or passion in their hearts for
the game ahead.

So what can a coach do to help improve the odds?

1~Have a sound routine. Everyone, from the smallest baby
thrives better when they're in a firm routine. This
involves the pre-game warm up which will be the same
whether it is used at home or away games. Make sure that
the players are aware of what's required from them and
their itinerary is clear and concise. If the players are
young, try using some experienced players to talk with them
and tell them what to expect. There is a saying that
'forewarned is forearmed'. If a player knows what might
happen they can prepare themselves mentally and this means
that there'll be fewer surprises and distractions. Some
very professional clubs will go ahead and video every
aspect of the visit from the hotel room to the training
site to the court. The players can then visualize the whole
thing and when they do get there they feel 'at home'.

2~When a team plays an away game, preparation is all
important. They will be playing on a strange court,
which the opposition will know all too well. The team may
encounter problems which are out of their control, such as
travel delays, or an unfair referee. Also the crowd will
be made up of supporters from the home team who will try
to undermine them. You must be prepared to ignore the
remarks made and stay calm and focused on the job in hand.
The opposition will be on their guard particularly if they
are faced with a composed team who are in control,
competitive and ready to take on anything in order to
win the game.

3~It is essential that the game should be enjoyed by all
players. Being part of a team with a positive attitude,
however strong the opposition, will enable them to overcome
the psychological problems of an unfair referee or the crowd
who supports the other team. Confidence will carry them
through and ensure that they play the best possible game
and win or lose they will be respected by all and have a
great sense of team spirit and pride.
