Picking the Perfect Fitness Club For You
by Edaline Peebles

Getting fit and healthy is one of the best things that you
can do for yourself. If you've resolved to get more active
so that you can lose weight, or just feel better, joining a
fitness club can offer you all sorts of benefits. When you
choose the right fitness club, exercising will be something
you look forward to instead of a chore that you avoid.

Attractive prices and promotions can be a tempting draw when
you're looking for a club to help you get fit and stay fit.
Price is only one factor in your choice, and it should be a
minor one. To help you decide which fitness club is the
right one for you, consider the following points.

Can you get there easily? Where the club is located can be a
major factor in whether you use your membership often. Look
beyond location for other conveniences, though. Is there
enough parking nearby? Are the hours of operation
convenient? If there are special activities that you enjoy,
are they scheduled at times that make sense for you?

Are the facilities clean and well-maintained? Cleanliness,
especially around showers, pools, tubs and changing rooms
should be a major factor in your decision. Equipment should
be wiped down frequently, and checked for an mechanical
problems at least daily.

Are you comfortable in the club? Face it - if you're not
comfortable in the setting, you won't want to go. Comfort
has as much to do with the clientele as it does with the
staff. Are the staff friendly? Do you feel out of place? Is
it a comfortable fit? This is a highly personal thing - you
may find it motivating to be surrounded by sculpted bodies
when you're trying to lose weight, while another might find
it intimidating. Pick a club that feels 'right' to you.

If you're looking for a family membership, does the fitness
club offer something for your entire family? The health club
that was perfect for your single buddy may be all wrong for
your family. Make sure that the club has trainers
experienced with children, as well as activities and
equipment that is age-appropriate for them.

Will you need child care while you work out? Many clubs
offer child care for their members' convenience, but it may
only be available during certain hours. Make sure you check
out the child care schedule to be certain it will be
available when you need it.

Do they offer a variety of activities, including ones that
take your needs into account? The wider your choices for
recreation, the less likely it will be that you'll get
bored. If you're a senior, or have arthritis or other joint
problems, look for low-impact aerobics workouts, water-
assisted exercise and other regimens that take your
limitations into account.

Is there enough equipment to go around? Visit the fitness
club during the hours that you'll be most likely to use it
to find out just how crowded it is. Long waits to use
popular equipment can be discouraging.

What kind of deal can you get on membership? You can almost
always get some kind of special deal or discount on
membership. Find out if your health insurance or employer
have a special arrangement with a local gym, and check them
out first. Other options include 2-for-1 memberships, extra
months or lower rates for longer terms of membership and
introductory offers. If you shop around a bit, you can find
a fitness club you love at a price you can afford.
