Cooking For The Perpetual Bachelor
by Michael Patronas
http://www.yahoo.com

Every modern single guy needs to know the basics of cooking
in order to survive. Eating out on a nightly basis isn~t
possible; it~s too expensive, or more often than not, too
unhealthy. If only in an effort to keep your body and your
wallet healthy, it~s necessary to have some basic skills in
the kitchen. Some people think of it as a basic Boy Scout
skill, kind of like knowing how to start a fire by rubbing
two sticks together or having the ability to pitch a pup
tent.

There is an endless supply of great recipes simple enough
for anyone to learn, as long as he has a few basic cooking
utensils. You can find recipes in cookbooks, on the
Internet, and from mom~s stash.

The first thing any guy wanting to get his hands dirty
and get knowledgeable about preparing his own tasty
culinary treats in the kitchen should know is BE
PREPARED. Just like the motto of the Boy Scouts,
this old adage applies in the kitchen as well as out in the
wilderness. No prepared chef would be caught dead
without at least the following necessary items for the
kitchen: Pots (at least two, one small sauce pot/pan and
one large pot for cooking stews, soups, pasta and
similar high volume dishes), frying pans (at least two,
one large, one small, for cooking up all sorts of fried
items that go well with Monday Night Football),
cooking spoons and/or spatulas (wooden AND metal,
slotted AND non-slotted, for stirring up trouble when
necessary), Tupperware-type containers (for storing
leftovers, of course).

Owning these simple tools is sure to inspire confidence and
visions of Julia Child cooking up a storm. Don~t try to
cook her dishes, at least in the beginning. Go for
something smaller and very simple. Maybe hamburgers or
chili would be in order. You could even get really creative
and make chili burgers.

With a little time and a little planning, and maybe a few
burned pans or two, just about any guy can be a whiz in the
kitchen. Not only will you impress the ladies, but you may
manage to feed yourself in the process. Start off my
following the recipes, before you get too creative and add
some funky ingredients. Remember, jalape~o are not an
essential cooking item in the kitchen.
