Fitting Exercise into Your Daily Schedule

Isn't technology wonderful? It used to be that we had
to get up to change channels, or to go to the stacks
in the library to do research, or to get from one
floor of a building to another. Plus, the latest
medical advances help us when we develop all of those
pesky diseases-of-inactivity like cancer, coronary
disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis.

Today's hectic lifestyles often preclude the time that is
needed for a daily workout routine. Yet there are many
ways to find time for exercising that can help you get to
and maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle.

1. If you want exercise to have a positive effect rather
than a negative one, you have to get up and move on a
regular basis. Experts recommend thirty minutes three
times a week as a minimum. When you start looking for
those thirty minutes, look at the times of day that
work best for your current lifestyle so that it isn't
an imposition and that it will be easy to stay consistent.

2. Break your exercise into small time segments. You don't
have to do thirty minutes of physical activity all at
once. Try doing ten-minute chunks of exercise at intervals
throughout the day. For example, you could walk ten
minutes outdoors when you first get up, take another
ten-minute walk at lunchtime, and add another following
dinner.

3. If the thought of a daily jog seems about as fun as
watching grass grow, then figure out a variety of
activities that will get you moving. Ditch the golf
cart and walk the links. Put the snow-blower or the
leaf-blower away and use a shovel or rake instead.
Take the stairs instead of the elevator or the
escalator. Rekindle an interest in the sports of your
youth that you're still capable of playing. Have fun,
don't make exercise a chore!

Remember this: Make exercise easy-to-schedule and easy-to-
perform (for you) in order to make it a welcome part of
your day. Check with your primary health-care provider to
assure that you have no health risks that could be
triggered by beginning an exercise routine. Do these
things and you'll likely find exercise to be effortless
to schedule because of the anticipation that precedes
each session!
